Uniform helps build a sense of pride, belonging, and identity in Scouting. It also gives young people a way to show what they’ve achieved. Here’s everything you need to know about what to wear and where badges go, for each section.
Don’t worry if you don’t have everything right away — we’re happy to help you get started, and second-hand options are often available. Badge placement guides are included below for each section.
We keep uniform practical and comfortable for weekly meetings, but for formal events (like parades or district activities), we may ask for smarter clothing too.
Beavers
Uniform:
Beavers wear a turquoise crew-neck sweatshirt along with the 1st Chilton neckerchief and a coloured plastic woggle (chosen by their Lodge). For weekly meetings, we only ask that they wear their sweatshirt with comfortable trousers (like joggers or school trousers) and practical shoes or trainers.
For more formal occasions, we may ask Beavers to wear black or navy trousers and black shoes, such as school shoes.
Badges:
Beavers begin earning badges right from their first few weeks — from the Membership Badge to activity badges like Hikes Away or Cook. Most badges are worn on the front of the sweatshirt.

Cubs
Uniform:
Cubs wear a dark green crew-neck sweatshirt with the group neckerchief and a woggle, which usually matches the colour of their Six (small team within the Pack). Like Beavers, we only require the sweatshirt, comfy trousers, and suitable shoes for weekly meetings.
For events like church parades or group photos, we may request black/navy trousers and black shoes for a smarter appearance.
Badges:
Cubs earn a wide range of badges, including Challenge Awards and Activity badges. The badge layout starts to get more structured, with Challenge badges forming a diamond shape on the front.

Scouts
Uniform:
Scouts wear a teal green long-sleeved shirt or blouse, along with their group neckerchief and a leather woggle. For regular meetings, they just need their shirt, comfortable trousers (like dark joggers or walking trousers), and outdoor-appropriate footwear.
On formal occasions, we ask Scouts to wear black or navy trousers and black shoes for a smart and respectful look.
Badges:
Scouts work toward higher-level Challenge Awards, staged activity badges (like Nights Away), and unique emblems from camps, trips, and leadership roles. These are placed in specific areas across the shirt.

Young Leaders/Explorers
Uniform:
Explorers wear a beige long-sleeved shirt or blouse with their district necker. Young Leaders who are helping with younger sections wear a special Young Leader badge on the left arm to show their role. At weekly meetings, they’re welcome to dress practically — just their shirt or hoodie, suitable trousers, and sturdy shoes.
For formal activities or presentations, we encourage black or navy trousers and smart shoes, in line with the wider Explorer Scout uniform.
Badges:
Young Leaders can wear their original Scout badges, along with new ones they earn through the Explorer programme or volunteering scheme. Badge placement varies depending on district/unit but follows similar guidelines.

If you’re ever unsure about where a badge goes or what’s required for an event, just ask a leader — we’re always happy to help!
