Moving Up In Scouts

As your young person grows, so does their Scouting journey. At 1st Chilton, we do our best to make each step feel exciting, supportive, and smooth — whether they’re moving up from Beavers to Cubs, Cubs to Scouts, or Scouts to something new.

We’ll always keep you informed when your child is getting close to the next section and give plenty of notice before any transition. Our leaders will work closely together to make sure each young person feels ready and confident about their next step.

Beavers to Cubs (around age 8)

Cubs offers bigger adventures and even more chances to gain independence. Before moving up, Beavers may visit Cubs for a few sessions to get used to new leaders and routines. Many of the skills they’ve learned as Beavers will carry over, giving them a great start in their new Pack.

Cubs to Scouts (around age 10½)

Moving to Scouts opens the door to even more outdoor adventures, leadership opportunities, and personal growth. Cubs will usually visit the Scout Troop for a few evenings before their move. We’ll make sure they know what to expect — from uniform changes to new challenges.

Scouts to Explorers (around age 14)

While we don’t currently run an Explorer Unit at 1st Chilton, we’re more than happy to help your young person continue their journey. Explorers is the next step in the Scouts programme, offering exciting activities, leadership roles, and the chance to take on bigger projects — like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or international camps.

We’ll work with you to find a local Explorer Unit that fits, and help arrange an introduction or trial visit so the transition feels natural and welcoming.

Becoming a Young Leader (ages 14–18)

Another brilliant option for Scouts moving on is to become a Young Leader. This role allows them to volunteer with a younger section — Beavers, Cubs, or Scouts — and develop valuable leadership, planning, and teamwork skills along the way.

Young Leaders are part of the wider Explorer programme, but spend their time supporting and helping run weekly meetings, camps, and activities. It’s a great way to give back to Scouting while learning skills that are useful for life and future work.

If your young person is interested in becoming a Young Leader at 1st Chilton, just let us know — we’d be thrilled to welcome them to the team.
